1. Typos - Around 50 per cent of CVs contain spelling mistakes or grammatical errors. This shows that you have not paid any attention to the detail on your CV and thE job you are applying for is not that important to you. Always spell check and proof read your CV before sending it to any employer.

2. Work experience listed in the wrong order - Always put your current / most recent position first. HR assistants and recruitment agencies are probably the first people your CV will get to before going to the key decision maker. Their job is to weed out the bad ones and put forward CVs that closely match the job specification. They don't care about you and they sure don't have the time to read through your CV. Don't make their life difficult or they will make your's frustrating.

3. Unexplained gaps in dates between jobs - If it is a significant gap (i.e. over two weeks) always try to demonstrate you were doing something positive with your time. If you don't, it goes in the bin. An employer really has not got the time to call you and ask you about the gap years, when gap years are explained on other CV's

4. Poor formatting - Keep it neat and simple (Times New Roman / Arial 11-12). If the employer cannot read your CV or it appears like a fashion parade, it goes in the bin.

5. It's not about what you want, it's about how you can benefit the employer. Stop using too many I's on your CV.

6. Irrelevant Information - Inclusion of holiday jobs or casual work that have no relation to the post you are applying for will waste the employer's time and make them think you are just filling up space for the sake of it.

7. Generic CVs - While job hunting, it is tempting to send a 'one size fits all' CV. Make sure you tailor each CV to the specific role you are applying for.

8. Disorganised - If your CV is hard to follow, with information scattered all over the page it is not likely to impress the potential employer. Be succinct and logical in your construction.

9. Overlong - CVs should be kept to 2-3 pages (depending on amount of experience). Avoid long sentences and paragraphs. Don't bore the world.10. Too basic - Too little information wouldn't be of interest to your prospective employer either.Initially, your CV is one of the only two documents the employer has at hand to assess you on.
